The vast majority of sulphur produced worldwide is by-product sulphur from refineries and other hydrocarbon processing plants. When the oil or gas is removed from the ground, a significant amount of processing is required to remove the sulphur. Wherever sulphur is exposed to air, the potential for forming corrosive substances is present. The largest provision of chemical protection is typically given to the sulphur pits(s), which are effectively large storage vessels.
